Recent Changes in Studies

We are in something of a transition period at Studies. Looking to the future. During these times, progress can seem slow, but rest assured we are working on new things, and keeping the app up-to-date with the latest changes made in Apple’s universe.

Some of you may have noticed we had to remove support for Quizlet a while back. Unfortunately, Quizlet decided they would not support 3rd party apps anymore, so we are looking at other options for the future. For now, you can download your Quizlet notes using CSV or TSV file format, and import them into Studies.

New Features in Studies

Things may seem a bit quiet around Studies, but there is plenty happening behind the scenes. The apps for macOS and iOS continue to advance.

In 2018, the macOS app got support for the new dark mode in Mojave, and can now import data from Anki files (apkg). It will also use text-to-speech technology to read text if audio is not available. This is great for learning foreign languages.

The iOS app also continues to develop, with support for text-to-speech and Anki package import.

Original Mental Case to Stop Working on iOS 11

It has been many years since we officially supported the original Mental Case app on iOS, but if you are still using it, you should install the latest Mental Case from the App Store now. The reason is that the original app will no longer run on iOS 11, due to restrictions placed by Apple.

To make sure you keep all of your data, download the new Mental Case app from the App Store. It should ask you to migrate your data when you first launch it. You should do this before you install iOS 11, because the original app cannot be installed or launched on iOS 11.

Finally, it is worth noting that we now have the Studies app, which replaces Mental Case. Once you have the latest Mental Case installed, and have migrated your data from the original app, you can install Studies (iOS) for free, and migrate to that, to be completely up-to-date.

Studies is Available on Setapp

Setapp is a new way to buy software for your Mac®. You pay $9.99 per month, and get access to more than 70 curated Mac apps, and Studies is now one of the apps available to Setapp customers. You don't have to pay for upgrades, and there are no other costs. A flat rate subscription gives you full usage of the apps, and they will be automatically kept up-to-date. Studies for iPhone/iPad is Available

A couple of months ago, we released Studies for Mac®, and now it is the turn of iPhone® and iPad®. Studies is available now in the App Store® for iPhone and iPad, and what's more, it is completely free!

You can migrate your data from Mental Case to Studies when you first launch the app. Your original Mental Case data remains unchanged.

Studies 1.0 for Mac

The app formerly known as Mental Case has finally moved on to bigger and better things — Studies 1.0 is now available in the Mac App Store.

From a distance, it may not have seemed like much was happening to Mental Case, but the truth lay elsewhere. We have been working on Studies for somewhere between 18 months and 2 years. The whole app has been overhauled, the UI refreshed, and the pain points — *cough* nobody mention 'sync' — addressed. Studies for Mac is an app we are proud of.

And, of course, we are working on the iPhone/iPad app. Two major updates at once was just too much, so we decided on a controlled release, first for the Mac, and following in the not too distant future with an app for iPhone and iPad. The two will sync up via iCloud, and many of the same improvements in the Mac app will also come to iPhone/iPad.

Mental Case will remain available for a while in the Mac App Store. This is to allow us to offer bug fixes for existing customers, as well as support those who cannot live without an iPhone/iPad app until Studies for iOS is available.
